Charlie Sheen, Loyal to His Fans, New York, April 11, 2011
Charlie Sheen was fully energized after his Sunday night Radio City Music Hall performance, the 6th show on his "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option Tour." New Yorkers showed their head line making star a lot of love with cheers, laughs and a standing ovation. Charlie Sheen returned their love and loyalty by shaking hands with a lot of people in the audience and a meet & greet that lasted over 2 hours. We've all read and heard a lot about Charlie's most recent escapades. People are fascinated with Charlie and his antics. I wish I had a quarter for every time I have heard or read the name Charlie Sheen. It seemed that Charlie just wanted to hang out with people. He photographed with his fans, asked them their names, what they did. People were just gushing to meet him and for some reason, almost everyone who walked over to him, used the 'F' word. It was funny, they all felt they could curse around Charlie. Some even told him their weaknesses and he gave them encouragement. I started to think I was witnessing some type of Sheentology, then figured I should just leave the jokes to Charlie and not think out loud. Bottom line, his fans love him and he loves them. Not once did he complain or express that he was rushed to be somewhere, he stayed until every last person was finished. People walked away with autographed posters, hats, T-shirts, admission tickets etc. but mostly, they walked away happy with a little piece of Charlie. He has a knack for making people feel special and looked directly and attentively in each persons eyes when they spoke. His interest was not an act, it was genuine. He seemed like a nice person. Barry Klarberg, Charlie's business manager said, "Charlie will be donating One Dollar of each ticket sold from his shows to the Red Cross Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund". That's a nice thing to do.
New York is known as the city that never sleeps and Sunday night was no different. The city didn't sleep and neither did Charlie Sheen, the self proclaimed 'Warlock'. After the meet and greet ended in the am, Charlie and a big entourage, (including Darryl Strawberry and my friend James Lipton who went on stage for a bit) all headed over to the new Southern Hospitality restaurant on 9th Ave. and 45th Street. There's a great private area downstairs with good music, a big screen TV and delicious southern food: all types of ribs, fried pickles, pulled pork, hush puppies etc. It was one of the owners (Eytan Sugarman's) birthday, so the celebration continued.
