Kentucky Derby 136, Churchill Downs, May 1, 2010 : May 1, 2010. The 136th Kentucky Derby took place in the rain at Churchill Downs. The "Run for the Roses" is known as the most exciting two minutes in sports. Calvin Borel, riding Super Saver, finished his 3rd Kentucky Derby victory in four years. 2nd place was Ice Box and third was Paddy O'Prado. May 1, 2010. This year the rain put a damper on things. Ladies covered their hats and outfits in clear plastic. The rain did not stop the festivities of the Kentucky Derby. In 2009, Churchill Downs initiated a new Oaks tradition by partnering with two charities that work to prevent breast cancer in women and men: Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and Horses and Hope. This year, Churchill Downs contributed $1 for every Oaks attendee to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and $1 for every Oaks Lily® beverage sold to Horses & Hope. According to the news, in 2009, Churchill Downs contributed more than $100,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and $30,000 to Horses and Hope. The Oaks drew a record crowd of 116,046 this year! Churchill Downs partnered once again with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and Horses and Hope to celebrate women, raise awareness for breast cancer research, education and prevention and transformed the world’s most legendary racetrack into a pink palace for Kentucky Oaks 136. Attendees were encouraged to participate in the second annual Kentucky Oaks PINK OUT on Friday, April 30th by incorporating pink, the official color of the Kentucky Oaks and breast cancer awareness, into their Oaks attire. The first ever PINK OUT at Churchill Downs in 2009 had impressive results. From hats to handkerchiefs, suits to sundresses, sunglasses to stilettos, ties to socks, Oaks guests were “tickled pink” to show their support by sporting all shades of rose, fuchsia, magenta and melon! Bethpage's Black Golf Course, Long Island, NY. Steelers champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger added another win to his successes with a score of 81, Michael Jordan finished with a 16-over-par 86 to take second in the four-player tournament, singer Justin Timberlake 88 and Larry Giebelhausen 101 . Phoenix police lieutenant Giebelhausen won a Golf Digest contest asking hopefuls to submit six-word essays explaining why they "Can Break 100" at Bethpage. Giebelhausen's winning six: "I'm a cop. I'll shoot low." Well-known golf pros served as caddies. Fred Couples caddied for Jordan, Rocco Mediate for Roethlisberger, and Anthony Kim carried Timberlake's bags on the challenging Bethpage Black course. Justin Timberlake brought his "sexy back" to the golf course sporting J Lindberg golf clothing from his line. Timberlake also brought along his new investment; "901 Silver Tequila" which is launching in NYC and across the United States. 901 is reportedly named after JT's hometown of Memphis' area code. The New York launch is scheduled to occur at Tenjune in Manhattan's trendy meat packing district tomorrow night at 9:01pm. 135th Annual Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs May 2, 2009 : Louisville, Kentucky . Mine That Bird took Kentucky by surprise in what may be the biggest upset in Derby history. The horse hugged the inside, coming from last place as if shot from a cannon. It was as if he came out of nowhere to win the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The crowd was speechless for a few seconds as if in shock, mouths wide open. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 longshot crossed the finish line 6 3/4 lengths ahead of the field. Jockey, Calvin Borel burst into tears, saying this was only the second time he'd ridden the horse. I must admit I was in shock as well, having bet $10 on Mine that Bird because I like the number 8. Had I checked my ticket stubs when I walked away from the window I would have realized that the woman entering my bet did not put it in. Oh well....at least I know I had the winner! Homestead Miami Raceway. This years NASCAR'S Sprint Cup Series concluded the Ford Championship Weekend. Carl Edwards led the race to win 157 laps at Homstead Miami Speedway and was the fastest. His speed was not enough, Edwards won the race but steady driving Johnson won the Sprint Cup Title and a place in NASCAR'S record books. This was Jimmie Johnson's 3rd consecutive championship with a 15th place run - beating Edwards by 69 points. Jimmie is the first NASCAR driver in history to do this since Carl Yarborough won three consecutive titles 30 years ago. Johnson's consistent driving of his No. 48 Hendrick Lowe's Motorsport Chevrolet is a valuable key to his success. It would be no surprise to fans if Jimmie sets a world record in 2009 by being the only driver to win 4 straight championships. Indy 500, May 25th 2008 : The 92nd Indianapolis 500 Mile Race was run on Sunday, May 25th, 2008 at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Scott Dixon came in first, with a record winning of $2,988,065.00. The 27 year-old was the first native of New Zealand to win the Indy 500, leading 115 of 200 laps. The drivers usually maintain speeds well over 225mph but the maximum speed for all was 147 mph due to the accidents....that did not stop the roar of the engines. 2nd place winner was Vito Meira #4 and 3rd place was secured by Marco Andretti #26. Coming in the 10th place spot was Townsend Bell #99, in the William Rast Honda Dollaria nicknamed 'the jeep' because of its army jeep like colors, thought of by Townsend Bell, Justin Timberlake and friends. Some of the news at the race was the interesting relationship between William Rast (fashion company) http://www.williamrast.com , Townsend Bell (driver), and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing (owners, Robbie Buhl and Dennis Reinbold). The Dreyer & Reinbold team consists of Townsend Bell, Milka Duno and Buddy Rice. The evening before the race was devoted to an early charity dinner hosted by Robbie Buhl, founder of Racing for Kids http://www.racingforkids.org. The organization helps chronically ill children through motor sports and visits by race car drivers to cheer them up and teach them about the motorsport. The 92nd Indy 500 was a spectacular event! The race drew more than 300,000 spectators. The celebrity line-up was diverse.
