Pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen's Welcome to New York Dinner at the National Arts Club April 21, 2009 : April 21, 2009, New York City. Pastor Joel Osteen brought his message of love, hope and encouragement to New York City. Tonight's dinner at the National Art's Club honoring Joel and Victoria Osteen was a preview to their upcoming "Historic Night of Hope" event that will take place at the new Yankee Stadium on April 25th. Victoria Osteen greeted guests stating, "God knows you are blessed by your hearts desires and the things you hold dear, we are pleased to be in New York and feel that God is pleased with you."

Emcee Rita Cosby said that Joel Osteen is "giving back" all over the world and decided to "give back" to the New York tri-state area after receiving a call from someone asking him to open Yankee Stadium. Joel Osteen ministries will distribute 5,000 free tickets to needy families for the "Historic Night of Hope." In cooperation with Feed the Children, 2 million dollars worth of food will be distributed to needy families in the tri-state area.

Sharon Bush, who is largely responsible for helping ensure that New York's "Night of Hope" is a success spoke through tears. She shared some of the difficulties she experienced in her life, stating, " I used to drive to the other side of town in Texas to attend the Osteen's tiny church in a seed store. Now that tiny little church has grown to be the largest church in the country." Bush described Victoria and Joel Osteen as caring and compassionate human beings.

Joel Osteen has a calming affect on people. He has a certain aura, perhaps it is his spirituality. Pastor Osteen was pleasant and grounded, maintaining complete focus on each individual he spoke with. Osteen said, "When you give good to God, He will give you good in return." He spoke of his shyness, sharing that he never wanted to speak publicly choosing to stay behind the scenes of his fathers church for 10 years. Osteen said, "When my father, a minister, died in 1999, I said my first sermon. I stepped up and took over the ministry-God does amazing things, I never thought I'd be a minister. Now God has opened another door, I am invited to speak at Yankee Stadium, I never thought I would do that either." Osteen said he does not talk down to people, he believes in lifting them up. He closed with a prayer and some humor, "Our prayer for you is that we see God do amazing things in your life." Adding, "We should all pray for the Yankee's to start winning as well."

It was a very moving evening. Tomaczek Bednarek entertained us with his music. Co-Chairs were Sharon Bush, Diane Bernhard, O. Aldon James, Margo Lanenberg, and Jean Shafiroff. The National Arts Club was the perfect location for such a warm and loving night of hope and love.

Lakewood Church services, led by Pastor Joel Osteen, are seen in over 100 nations around the world. Joel's first book, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential, was released in October 2004. In December 2006, he was named one of the year's "Ten Most Fascinating People" by Barbara Walters. Osteen released his second book, titled Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day in October 2007, which topped the New York Times Best Sellers List with a first printing of three million copies. Osteen told Larry King the new book focused more on relationships and not getting stuck where we are in life. "Just my basic message of becoming all God's created you to be," His popularity led to him being featured as one of ABC News' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2006."

New York City. March 17th, 2009. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was honored at the UN General Assembly for his lifetime of service in human rights. Nobel Peace Prize winner Tutu once said, “do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world," epitomizing the spirit of the MDG Awards. Widely regarded as “South Africa’s moral conscience”, he has been described by Nelson Mandela as “somewhat strident, often tender, never afraid, and seldom without humor, his voice will always be the voice of the voiceless.” Tutu managed to entertain all of us with his comedic comment, “I’m not as young as I look.” He spoke of a 400 year old school in Holland that he visited after it was named in his honor and said a child asked him, “Were you here when the school was built?” He danced and sang off the stage singing, “I’m going to take a sentimental journey.” It is obvious why Tutu has so many books compiled of his speeches and sayings. Many people were in awe of being in the presence of such a great human being and humanitarian.

Actor Armand Assante opened the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) program, remarking, “I am pleased to be among the most extraordinary minds of humanitarianism in the world. Many have to negotiate through hatred to get things done, these men negotiate through peace.” Macy Gray rocked the UN with her message of love getting everyone moving to her hit “Say Good-Bye”, a perfect Millennium message for us all, “My world crumbles if you are not here.” Sol Guy, the co-founder of DCM, and co-creator, co-producer, and host of MTV’s 4REAL teased the audience to let loose and not give “diplomatic claps” when applauding. A veteran artist manager, Sol is one of Canada’s leading music executives .4REAL is a community of individuals from around the world who are passionate about creating social change through action, art, and culture. K’Naan; (known for his rhymes and activism), belted out his memories of growing up in a war torn Somalia. Njakatiana, heart throb singer from Madagascar melted the hearts of the audience. Mike Hucknall from Simply Red sang “Come to My Aid” solo. The evenings band was made up of multi-instrumentalist and musical director for Paul Simon; Mark Stewart, Steve Jordan on drums, David Paich from TOTO on keyboard , Keaton Simon on guitar, and other award winning artists. Sol said, “We have a collective chance to make a radical change.” It was a treat to see The Junior Fountain Gospel Choir perform amongst the great artists of the world.

Dr. Kevin M. Cahill was presented with A Lifetime Achievement Award for his life long dedication of extraordinary service. Dr. Cahill said, “healing and solidarity are moral responsibilities for all of us.” He reflected upon his experiences in disease ridden Somalia in 1962, the embargoes on health care that affected Nicaurauga in 1987, first hand accounts of what is happening in Darfur, Chad and the Congo. He stated that he has “tried to heal the wounds of war.” Dr. Kevin M. Cahill, is a leading specialist in tropical medicine who worked in the streets of India with Mother Teresa. For more than 45 years, Dr. Cahill has been a driving force in humanitarian assistance and relief efforts around the world.

Largely responsible for putting the evenings festivities together were David NG; Chairman of the World Harmony Alliance and H.E. Ambassador Francis Lorenzo. Lorenzo stated that to achieve the MDGs, we need to develop a global partnership for development and to address the challenges effectively. Action and interaction are needed in all countries and from all sides: governments, business, non-governmental organizations, academia, community groups, individuals and United Nations entities

Jonathan Granoff ; author, attorney, and international peace activist who’s life's work is dedicated to the total elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide spoke. Granoff called the UN “home for everyone” saying, “While many worry about Wall Street, the majority of the poverty stricken in the world have no street.” Poverty levels around the world are deepening with each passing month. He said that $1.3 Trillion a year is spent on military.

Opening remarks were made by H.E. Miguel d’Escato Brockmann about the South South Corporation to help the worlds poorest and most vulnerable people. Other remarks were made by H.E. Nassir Abdlaziz Al-Nassar and Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs. We were reminded of the Millennium Goal set in 2000 to bridge the gap between poverty and wealth. We have lost a decade when we expected to be closing the gap between the rich and poor. With recent economic downturns this goal is growing increasingly difficult.

The General Assembly was filled with government officials, international luminaries, renowned artists, astute members of society and celebrated figures. Those in attendance socially, sprinkled among world leaders and humanitarians were "Wealth manager to the stars" Barry Klarberg of Monarch Management, Michael Lohan with divorce lawyer Leslie Barbara, Robin Cofer and Dominic D'Alleva, Colleen and Gary Rein, Paola and Arni Rosenshein, new parents Dr. Howard Sobel and wife Gayle, James Cavello and Margarite Amleida of The Worldwide Children's Foundation of NY, Susan Needles: Director/Special Events for Henry Buhl's ACE for the Homeless, Dr. Serena Deutsch: Vice President of One Bright World, my children; Alana and Justin Galloway, publicist Nikki Klarberg, bejeweled and glamorous Iris Schwartz and Michelle Walker, bachelor extraordinaire Errol Rappaport, the lovely Daniela Zahradnikova, jewelry designer Anne Besemant Cohen, Joseph Placide, Elliott Maynard; Founder of Arcos Cielos Research Center, and Paul Beck of Versace.

The “lifetime achievement” recognition is being used to kick-off what will be an annual MDG awards event. Beginning in September, the awards program will shift to recognize individuals, organizations and nations that are making impressive progress in implementing the eight MDGs as established in 2000 by the United Nations. The goals are to be achieved by 2015 in response to the world’s primary development challenges.

Your Bio

My primary interest is and always has been philanthropy. Most of my life has been dedicated to helping others. Raising awareness for causes and their mission is a priority. I often chair events or am involved with charities in some capacity. One of my main strengths is my ability I to encourage people to participate and donate to causes.

Currently, I am chairing the National Meningitis Associations event in New York City scheduled for April 26th, 2010. I chaired their event last year and am honored that they asked me to return. To learn more and view my work and list of people I have helped bring on board please go to http://www.nmaus.org/gala2010.htm

There are many charitable organizations and philanthropists in the areas in which I reside; New York City, Southampton, and Greenwich Ct. I often write about and photograph causes as an additional way to raise awareness. My work has been published in magazines and on websites including The Insider, Times Square Gossip, sdmackpictures.com, manhattansociety.com, The Quest for It, Black Tie, Gotham, and Gladys magazines to name a few. I have strong working relationships with people from all walks of life often working closely with philanthropists, celebrities, corporate leaders, pillars of society, members of the media, photographers, public relations people, publishers and editors who share a common goal, to help others.

My charitable affiliations are broad. I recently resigned from the Board of Directors of The Worldwide Childrens Foundation of NY, and currently serve on several nonprofit committees: Best Buddies with Anthony Kennedy Shriver, A.C.E. for the Homeless with Henry Buhl, Help for Orphans International with Sarah Ehrlich, The National Meningitis Association, The American Heart Association of Long Island, amongst others. I have also been involved with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Awards, The Bob Woodruff Foundation and countless missions and events that can be viewed on this website.

My education as a Registered Nurse and specialty in ICU Trauma and Neurology has helped shape my ability to empathize with those in need. During my tenure as a nurse, I met John Casablancas of Elite Models at a seminar and was invited to NYC to model. Modeling allowed me to travel the world and learn about various cultures. I lived in NYC and Europe for several years, working in numerous television, print and radio campaigns. Often playing the role of a nurse on soap operas I was asked to be the Spokesperson for Keri Lotion internationally for 3 years. I am a current member of SAG, AFTRA and AEA eligible.

My children are my greatest accomplishment. They are also involved with various charities and perform community service on a regular basis. The column I write in Black Tie Magazine is titled, "Affairs from the Heart." I think that title describes what I do the best. Charity work is my passion, helping others has been my love affair and it's all from the heart.

We all get the chance to walk through this life once, it is up to us to know how to use our strengths not only to help ourselves but to help others and try and make the world a better place. The path I have chosen is to attempt to help as many people as I can, in whatever large or small way possible.
